Freshman Trevor,
This is your last season of basketball. Things get crazy in a few years, even this year, but you gotta just hold on. Last year, your 8th grade year, was the last time you will ever play baseball. And this year? This is the last season of basketball you'll play with a team. Over the years you’ve played basketball, you were pretty good, but this coming season, freshman year, you need confidence. Without confidence in yourself you won't last long. And you didn't. You played your last season.
And now? It's over.
You grew up, and watched everyone you once played sports with lose interest over the years. You were pretty much the last one standing. Growing up with basketball and baseball, you had a lot of friends that played, but they have all slowly lost interest. It wasn't the same anymore once high school started. People are going to tell you it's your best 4 years of sports you'll ever get, but you don't see it. In years before you loved the game. Some of the first memories you have of your dad is watching Rondo and Garnett play years ago. Playing the game with the friends you grew up with was the best. Even though it was middle school, it felt like you guys had a connection that was different...but freshman year, who are these people?
It's all slipping away.
Eventually, you won't regret a thing. You have plenty of friends that you hangout with regularly. You get a job at Walmart and push all sports aside. That's fine. You'll hate working at Walmart. You aren't treated like an individual. You're a number. You want more than that. You didn't fit there and you've never been more okay with that, but you get through it.
Through sports, you've learned to work with others...but even more importantly, you realized why you quit playing. You lacked confidence. Sports didn’t feel the same when all your friends left. When they were there with you it almost added a level of confidence. You felt like you were all meant to be there. You tried to keep playing, but it didn't feel the same as it used to.
For you, now the season is over, and you won't go back. You stay busy though, through other things that come and go in your life. You stay busy. You learned things through sports, but most importantly, you noticed the confidence you lacked on the court. Maybe you were weak, or maybe you got an unfair start in high school sports. You did learn this though: be your own person. Do not rely on others to do what you love, but don't do something you no longer love for others either.
