Marquis: Warrior to Eagle

Updated: Oct 30, 2019

At Nokomis, baseball has always been a sport that isn’t as popular as the rest, but for senior pitcher Cody Marquis, popularity of a sport doesn’t matter. Baseball is a big part of the Marquis family style. Since picking up a baseball bat and ball at the age of four playing t-ball, Cody’s love for the game grew, more and more, every day. Cody spent a majority of his free time meeting famous baseball players and going to games which made his love for the game of baseball expand. He had a tough freshman season at MCI and then switched over to Nokomis to grow both academically and athletically. Now he will become a Husson Eagle.

When Cody was 9 years old, he realized he was in love with the game. In one of his games growing up, he was told that it was his chance to pitch -- and it was his first time. They were losing, but came back. In that moment, he knew he wanted to continue pitching and getting better. He really fell in love with the position at 12 years old when he started striking nearly everyone out. He knew he could go somewhere if he could keep getting better. “I realized baseball was my sport freshman year. After tryouts were over, I was told I would become MCI's ace pitcher as a freshman over one of their juniors on the team."

Cody has had many achievements:

Honorable Mention: Player of the Year Running. (Stats: .400 BP, 14 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, 56 strikeouts, 1-3 record,) No hitter vs MCI 19-3 (5 innings pitched, 8 strikeouts, 3-3, 2 RBIs, 5 stolen bases). Honorable Mention: Underclassman All Star Game

Cody had tough decisions to make. He has a passion for sports and wanted to major in sports journalism. Cody had offers with UMaine, USM, and URI, but they didn’t have the program he was looking for. He wanted to stay close to home for his first year. His brother Connor is still in high school, and he didn’t want to miss out on watching him grow and succeed.

Cody knows going from high school to the collegiate level will be tough, but he feels he is more than capable of handling it as a Husson Eagle. Marquis says, “I’m really excited to play at the next level. It's definitely going to be a big jump from high school to college, but that’s the fun in the journey with this great opportunity. I can’t wait until next season to play against some of the best of the best." Cody spoke with head coach, Chris Morris. “We are really excited to be talking with you; we have done our homework and you are definitely a great fit from what we have seen.”

Cody Marquis will be signing his letter after the basketball season.
